Innovation variétale en Champagne : tour d’horizon des perspectives. Programme régional CepInnov sur les variétés résistantes à typicité régionale en cours de sélection intermédiaire & Panorama des variétés résistantes européennes

Abstract : To face the current issues: climate change, ecological transition, societal demand for a more sustainable and eco-responsible viticulture, various actors of the profession are working hard on new projects. In the Champagne PDO, the Champagne Committee (CIVC) is working in this direction. Within the sustainable development pole, plant material department is turning towards varietal innovation and the creation of varieties resistant to cryptogamic vine diseases: mildew and powdery mildew. A first national program, led by INRAE, organizes the VATE monitoring of INRA-ResDur 2 and 3 varieties, which follow the INRA-ResDur 1 varieties, which 4 were registered in 2018 (Floreal, Vidoc, Artaban and Voltis). But a second program named CEPInnov goes even further, by following new resistant varieties with regional typicity, allowing to answer the demand for "Champagne typicity" and regional identity. It is directed by INRAE and conducted by the BNIC at the same time, which has a second plot identical to the Champagne Comittee’s plot. These new varieties have been planted in 4 times: 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Now, only 2018 and 2019 plantation have been monitored, respectively for 2 years and 1 year, and are still at the intermediate selection stage. At the end of this follow-up, some of these varieties judged the most promising from a phenological, physiological and organoleptic point of view, will continue the selection process in VATE. In order to meet the expectations of the wine growers, tastings on the theme of varietal innovation have been proposed to them. In addition, in order to have an active and enlightened city on what is being done elsewhere, a European panorama, summarizing the European resistant varieties, has been produced. It will allow to visualize quickly and efficiently the foreign resistant varieties, whose evaluation in Champagne could be interesting for future perspectives. Through its commitment to innovation, the Champagne Committee tries to meet the expectations of the professionals of the Champagne industry, and to prepare Champagne as well as possible to face the new challenges.
