La symbolique du placenta : vers de nouveaux usages ? Étude des différentes façons d’envisager et de disposer du placenta suite à la naissance chez onze femmes francophones

Abstract : Introduction: Currently, after the birth of a newborn, the placenta is considered as a biomedical waste. But some cultures, like the Polynesians, value this organ. There are various placental rituals in the world, such as the burial. Recently, some parents on French ground have included in their birth projects, some requests concerning the placenta. This study’s principal objective is to understand the motivations of the women who would like to keep and use the placenta after birth. Consequently, the main question that will be dealt with here is: Why, while most people are indifferent to the placenta, or even disgusted by it , do others care about it and even want it for after birth use? Methods :To answer the problem, a qualitative study was carried out. Eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with French-speaking women who used their placentas following birth. Results :Four main placental practices emerged from the interviews: burial, consumption, placental imprint and the lotus placenta (umbilical cord left intact between the baby and the placenta). Conclusion :It emerged from this study that the goal of the participants was to use the virtues of the placenta to heal themselves and their children. But they also want to value this organ to thank it for keeping their babies alive during pregnancy. Thus, this research suggests a gap between the status of the placenta in the hospital protocol and the way in which these women consider and wish to dispose of the issue.
