Les méthodes naturelles de gestion de la fertilité : étude descriptive des motivations et du vécu des couples formés à leur utilisation

Abstract : Introduction: Natural family planning methods are based on a precise observation of fertility signs. By identifying fertile periods, couples adapt their sexuality according to their pregnancy project without any interference with them. Method: The aim of the study was to learn about the motivation and the couple’s personal experience. A qualitative study was conducted from semi-structured interviews with trained couples. Results: Couples were enthusiastic by body awareness they discovered and the respect of the female cycle. Although rigorous, these methods brought an enriching dialog within the couple and a much-appreciated involvement of the spouse. All of them insisted on the enhanced communication and unity that it developed in their couple and placed great confidence in the method, while stressing the importance of the training that proved to be essential. Discussion: With natural family planning methods the responsibility for fertility does not rest solely on the woman. Despite several difficulties, couples don’t hesitate to promote them, although negative representations by the public and the scientific community are still very real. Conclusion: The choice of a natural family planning method follows a real path of reflection. It is a respectful, ecological, modern and reliable alternative to contraception. By improving the couple’s relationship and his sexuality, it ensures a deepening of conjugal love. Couples believe it would be beneficial for health professional to inform women about their physiology.
