L’importance de l’odontologie dans l’exploration spatiale

Abstract : The Space conquest improves itself and the aim of this decade would be for most of the nations to send humans to Mars. The astronaut have to deal with longer-timed and further-distanced missions from the earth. Thus human body is not made for such extrem life conditions as weightlessness or exposure to cosmic radiations. Odontological accidents were told during missions and multiple physiopathological modifications were observed on the spacemen. On the ISS (International Space Station) as on Earth these physiological alterations that may increase according to the amplification of the length of time, are studied very accurately in order to be able to suggest the best therapeutical care which is done during the flight. Going back to Earth immediately would be impossible in case of a dental emergency, which could provide bad consequences to the proper achievement of the mission. Then, because it is impossible to send medical staff as dentists in the shuttles, the spacemen will have to be trained in dental cares and prevention will play an essential role to anticipate these emergencies. A specific and accurate preparation will have to be thought and accomplished before the departure and during these missions when astronauts experiment life on the planet. In order to prevent dental problems during the flight and to guaranty the proper operational capacity of the spacemen. Setting up new technological devices in the shuttles as 3D printers would be worthy to be considered.
