Les Candidas chez l’enfant et l’adolescent sains

Abstract : Candidas are found in a saprophytic state in the oral cavity. In case of dysbiosis they are responsible for candidiasis. Recently, their involvement in the virulence of caries disease has been studied. Studies on the oral biofilm shed light on the symbiosis between Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans. This interaction between an opportunistic fungus and a pathogenic bacterium leads to a significantly increased virulence of the caries disease. Through a review of the literature analyzing the prevalence of Candida in healthy children and adolescents as a function of age, of different genotypic groups, and of environmental and socio-cultural factors, we have highlighted the strong prevalence of these yeasts in this population, for a low prevalence of candidiasis. Given the role of Candida albicans on the oral health, especially the development of caries lesions, attention should be drawn to the importance of rigorous oral hygiene.
