Prévalence des prescriptions de probiotiques en France chez les médecins généralistes

Abstract : Context: for the past ten years, probiotics and microbiota have gained interest amongst the scientific community and the general population. Use of probiotics is a contentious subject, and their benefits are somewhat questioned. How many general practitioners prescribe probiotics to their patients? What are the terms of such prescriptions?
Methods: a literature review, based on Pubmed and Cochrane databases, which focuses on probiotics has allowed to define the main probiotic strains involved in various diseases. A quantitative study estimates the prevalence of probiotics prescription in a population of GP, who are members of a medical group found on a social network.
Results: 80% of the 123 general practitioners who answered the survey have prescribed probiotics in the past year. General practitioners are more used to prescribing probiotics to adults and elderly than to children. Main indications are associated-antibiotics diarrhea, gastroenteritis, functional intestinal disorders and vulvovaginitis. Prescriptions are limitedby poor knowledge and lack of evidence. The GPs questioned are in favor of a prescription support tool online.
Conclusion: doctors and patients are interested in probiotics but a support in prescription is necessary. Involvement of probiotics in medicine should help treat various diseases in the years to come, and it is necessary to clarify this involvement with scientific research.
