Connaissance des hommes majeurs sur l’anatomie du sexe de la femme : étude quantitative transversale

Abstract : INTRODUCTION. The representation of the female body has evolved over the centuries and is related to issues of exposure to pornography, sexual education, and birth control. The objective of the current study is to measure adult men's knowledge about the female anatomy and to study its associated factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A descriptive cross-sectional study using anonymous questionnaires among men over 18 years of age consulting a general practitioner in Normandy and Auvergne-Rhône-Alps. The questionnaire included 23 items with questions related to socio-demographic data, sexuality, and female body image. The statistical analysis was descriptive, then univariate and multivariate by multiple linear regression. RESULTS. 158 questionnaires were collected between July and September 2021 with an average score of 14.1 out of 23 points. The lack of knowledge was more related to the diagram of the vulva than to the genitals in frontal section; with confusion around the terms vulva and perineum; and lack of knowledge of the clitoral organ. Better knowledge was positively associated with level of education (p<0.01), having experience as a couple (p<0.05), and involvement in contraception (p<0.01). DISCUSSION. This study is original, and other existing publications show this same link between lesser knowledge and low levels of education, lack of sexual education at school, and lack of dialogue with parents about sexuality. CONCLUSION. Adult men's lack of knowledge about the anatomy of the female sex suggests the need to open up the dialogue about sexuality by using appropriate language.
