Expériences des professionnels de soins premiers sur l’accès à la santé des personnes sourdes signantes à La Réunion

Abstract : Background: The law of February 11th, 2005 on equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship of people with disabilities stipulates that public services must be able to welcome deaf people in French sign language (LSF). However, the linguistic issue in accessing to healthcare for deaf people seems unrecognized even though measures have been increasingly present since 1995 and the creation of the first specific access to healthcare in sign language in Paris. The main objective of this study is Encounters with deaf signing people reveal that our health system is unsuitable for certain primary care contexts.to describe the experiences of primary care professionals regarding access to healthcare for deaf people using sign language in La Reunion. Method: Qualitative study using open individuals interviews with primary care professionals. Professionals were identified by deaf people as their primary care physicians despite not practicing sign language. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was carried out. Results: 6 primary care professionals were interviewed: 3 general practitioners, 2 midwives and a dentist. The study revealed a sense of isolation among primary care professionals about their practice in general. This sense is particularly salient in contexts of “extraordinary” care. In addition, the study showed a blurred definition and role of communication in healthcare settings. Finally, ethics and deontology concepts proved difficult to apply in situations where they are expected to be more present. Conclusion: Encounters with deaf signing people reveal that our health system is unsuitable for certain primary care contexts.
