Étude qualitative sur l’état des lieux de l’incontinence urinaire d’effort chez les handballeuses nullipares, de leurs pratiques de renforcement musculaire abdominal et de leurs connaissances sur ce sujet

Abstract : Practicing handball can increase the risk of developing stress urinary incontinence (SUI). In addition to a weak pelvic floor, doing some specific abdominal muscle strengthening exercises may aggravate the occurrence of leaks. Although scientific data on this topic is already published, SUI stays a very touchy subject. Purpose: to evaluate how many handball players are suffering from SUI, to determine what are their knowledge about this subject and what kind of abdominal muscle strengthening they are practiced. Methods: A self-administered retrospective questionnaire was created in “LimeSurvey” and sent to a population of nullipara handball players over 18 years old, mostly playing in Brittany at a level between “competition” and “elite”. RESULTS: In total, 151 sportswomen returned a complete survey. Results show that approximately 25% of players have or have already had urinary leaks while practicing handball especially during a jump, and 75% never talked about that with someone, because of shame or ignorance. 90% practicing specific abdominal strengthening exercises, like crunch exercises. 83% have never heard about the physiotherapist’s role in SUI care and 78% have never heard about prevention. Discussion and conclusion : sharing knowledge about SUI, the great manner of practicing abdominal muscle strengthening, and the possible way to cure SUI, may be interesting to prevent SUI and to demystify it.
