L’œuvre transmédiatique Cat Ghost : analyse d’une forme fictionnelle émergente

Abstract : Fifteen years ago, Henry Jenkins theorized the notion of Transmedia Storytelling, through the study of a few works, and primarily the movie franchise The Matrix, followed by nods to the independent movie The Blair Witch Project and to the first modern alternate reality game: The Beast. Since, essays on transmedia storytelling have predominantly taken whole franchises as their object of studies, thus ignoring the case of self-contained transmedia works. For this reason, the study of a recent example of transmedia work might reveal mechanisms of storytelling yet unexplored. Featuring a dozen of videos alongside video games and a website, Cat Ghost is a transmedia work of fiction created by Kris Patrick, uploaded on the video-sharing platform YouTube from 2017 to 2019. As a webseries, Cat Ghost tells the story of an anthropomorphic set of characters: a cat, a ghost and a hedgehog in an unknown fictional setting. In addition to the series, the software programs and website both complexify its narration, adding new characters, sets and scenes to its world, that seem unrelated. This essay focuses on Cat Ghost, to find out the limits of current studies on digital media and narratives to apprehend this object, and it determines how the unique properties of Cat Ghost as a conglomerate of cultural media directly impact the manifestation of its fictional world. To that end, this essay first analyzes Cat Ghost through its influences, studying how they are featured in relation to each other. A second part focuses on the role of the receptors, in order to, in a final part, delineate some unique features of its fictional world and how they are tied to new mechanisms of storytelling.
