Investigation of the use of biochar to enhance nitrate removal in Danish woodchip bioreactors and reduce nitrous oxide emissions

Abstract : In Denmark, transport mitigation measures are crucial tools to limit water pollution linked to exceeding nitrate in agricultural outflows. In fact, the entire arable surface is described as NVZ (Nitrate vulnerable zone) by the European Commission and would have nitrate concentrations equal or above the legal threshold of 50mg/l without preventing measures. Woodchip bioreactors allow the denitrification of agricultural outflows by the enzymatic activity of microbial communities. However, it has been reported that those reactors emit nitrous oxide due to the denitrification process. The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency of the introduction of biochar to enhance denitrification and reduce N2O emissions. A semi-field trial lasting 6 weeks was conducted with 3 modalities: woodchips, woodchips with 5% biochar and woodchips with 10% biochar. For denitrification, no significant difference was found between the modalities. Regarding N2O emission reduction, a significant effect was found in presence of biochar. However other factors were more significant such as the heterogeneity of the triplicates and the impact of time. It can only be concluded that biochar probably has a reducing effect on, N2O emissions. These results are close to similar studies and metanalyses. Only further research will enable a full understanding of the efficiency of biochar to enhance denitrification and reduce N2O emissions.
