Non participants au projet SPICES : causes d’arrêt intrinsèques à l’étude. Une étude qualitative

Abstract : Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of mortality in the world. Concrete mesures of prevention can avoid most of this pathology. Healthcare inequalities are strong in France, including in the Centre Ouest Bretagne (COB) area. SPICES was an implementation study targeted in the C.O.B population. Its aim was to provide a cardiovascular prevention model, with a favorable benefit-risk cost, on people defined as « medium CVR », according to the Interheart score. Some of them did not continue the study. This study research the inherent reasons of the interruption of this study, from the non-participant’s point of view. Material and methods : qualitative study, inspired by embedded theorisation. Judgmental sampling among the non-participants, according to age, sex, place of residence, socio-professional category, and part of participation in the study. Semi-structured interviews were realised until the data’s theoric saturation. Data’s triangulation was done by a blind coding. Results : ten interviews were done, then came a second version of the interview guide. Data’s theoric saturation obtained at the ninth interview. Main issues were: distance and frequency of the meeting, organisation by groups, actors’ relationship, and lack of information about the study. Discussion : similar causes of abandonment exist in literature : distance, actors’ relationship, lack of information. Data’s triangulation is a methodological strength. Weaknesses were due to the Covid’s barriers gestures. Research perspectives may be: possibilities for improvement from the point of view of non-participants, impact of Covid on participation, consequences of wearing a surgical mask during interviews.
