Les protestants des Cévennes durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale : de la résignation aux résistances (1939-1944)

Abstract : This research work proposes a global study of the attitude of Protestants in the Cévennes during the Second World War. While Protestantism is largely a minority in the French landscape and has only a limited influence, it is, on the contrary, very present in the Cévennes, a veritable 'memory-land' for this religion in France due to its Camisard past. The religious but also historical, social and political involvement specific to Protestants in the region resulted in the formation of a "Protestanto-Cevenol" mentality and culture. From 1939 to 1944, the aim is to identify the specificities and developments that resulted from the behaviour of this community in the Cévennes. To do this, the study is based essentially on reports from the Vichy authorities and on various testimonies from pastors or Cévenol Protestants. Whether it was a question of adherence to Marshalism in 1939, which was quickly discarded in favour of a civil resistance driven, among other things, by the Jewish question, or an armed resistance in the maquis, which was more cautious and heterogeneous, which emerged in 1943, but where the link with the religious factor was not always formally established, the behaviour of the Cévennes Protestants constantly oscillated between a specific regional model and an attitude similar to that of the rest of the French Protestant community.
