Ergothérapeute et proches aidants en Établissement d’Hébergement pour Personnes Âgées Dépendantes : quelle collaboration ?

Abstract : Background: In nursing homes, there is the triangular relationship family members/resident/health-care providers. The family caregivers may feel guilty when facing the institutionalization of their loved ones and they want to get involved. Occupational therapists work on the social environment, which includes the family caregivers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the means used by occupational therapists to communicate with family caregivers in order to collaborate efficiently with them. Methodology: It was a qualitative research based on semi-strutured interviews. Six interviews were conducted with occupational therapists working with the family and in a nursing home for at least 1 year. One interview was conducted with a resident’s family caregiver. A longitudinal analysis followed by a cross-sectional one were done to cross-reference the interviews. Results: According to the results, occupational therapists used mainly emails, phone calls and informal meetings as means of communication to collaborate with family caregivers. For them, the main bases for collaboration were the exchange of knowledge sharing, the trust and the communication. They put situations that encourage the collaboration with the family caregivers in place (eg: role-playing situations, participation in activities, etc.) Conclusion: Occupational therapists employed more informal means of communication (as mentioned above) in order to collaborate with family caregivers. To do so, they adapted to their interlocutor. The aims of this collaboration were to improve the resident’s care for his/her well-being and to reduce conflicts with family caregivers.
