Évaluation des connaissances et des besoins de formation en nutrition et conseils nutritionnels chez les étudiants en troisième cycle de médecine générale de la subdivision de l’Océan Indien en 2020

Abstract : Introduction : Non-communicable diseases related to diet have been increasing in the world for the last 50 years. Reunion and Mayotte are sensitive French overseas territories on this point. Physicians are at the forefront of nutrition awareness efforts, however, there is no study evaluating the state of knowledge in nutrition among general practitioners in training (interns) in these territories. Objective : To assess the state of knowledge, attitudes and practices about nutrition in the population of general medicine interns of the Indian Ocean subdivision as well as their desire and need for training. Method : A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from November 2020 to January 2021 using a digital self-questionnaire among the population of general medical interns in the Indian Ocean subdivision. Results : The participation rate among students was 26%. The median mean overall score obtained for the knowledge part was 56.72/100 [50.23; 58.90]. Participants did better on the "general nutrition" questions than on the "nutritional recommendations" or "specificities of Reunion and Mayotte" questions (p<0.001). Only 9 % of the participants declared themselves sufficiently trained to deliver relevant nutritional advice to their patients. Nutritional assessment was reported as important by 76.9 % of the participants and 97 % wanted to be trained in nutrition and nutritional counselling. Conclusion : General medicine interns in the Indian Ocean report a lack of knowledge about nutrition and nutritional counselling and wish to receive more training.
