État des lieux des connaissances et freins à la vaccination anti-HPV auprès des jeunes adultes entre 18 et 19 ans (étude qualitative)

Abstract : Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world and many types of HPV could cause different cancers in men and women. HPV vaccination is the most effective way in preventing consequences of infections by HPV but the vaccination coverage in France is still insufficient. The recent universal vaccination with the HPV vaccine in France could change in a positive way the current situation. The main objective of this study is to collect, analyze the opinion, and evaluate the knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccine, as well as the barriers, facilitators and potential strategies for increasing HPV vaccination in a major population up to 19 years old. Materials and méthods: this qualitative research based on semi-structured interviews for men and women aged 18 to 19 years old who come to visit the University health center for a preventive medical examination. Results: HPV vaccine is perceived positively, and most adults interviewed support vaccination. Getting individual and collective immunization as well as decreasing prevalence of consequences HPV infection are the main reasons for increasing the adherence of HPV vaccination. The lack of knowledge associated with misleading information may influence people to not vaccinate themselves. Dissemination of HPV vaccine information seems to be an effective way to increase HPV vaccination rates. Conclusion: the universal vaccination with the HPV vaccine with major ethical issues is likely to increase the vaccination rate improving collective immunization. The role and the actions of physicians and health authorities are decisive to achieve goals and objectives.
