Les protections menstruelles : un enjeu sanitaire, écologique et économique. Quelle place pour le réutilisable ?

Abstract : Objective: evaluate the profile of users of reusable protection and determine the motivations and obstacles to this change by highlighting the health, economic and environmental consequences of menstrual protections. Material and method: this was an epidemiological, descriptive, cross-sectional, non-randomized study conducted nationwide by anonymous questionnaire from October 1 to December 1 via social networks. Two groups were defined: users of disposable and reusable protection. Results: 8953 women were included. Users of reusable pads (RP) (46.3%) were in the 25-34 age group, were in couples and cohabitants, had a level of education higher than 4 years and an income higher than 1500 euros. Users of disposable pads (DP) (53.7%) were in the 15-24 age group, without a spouse or in a non-cohabiting couple, with a level of education ranging from bac+1 to bac+3, still students, and with no income or less than 500 euros. Women using RP were more concerned by the ecological impact (RR= 0.54; IC95%: 0.52-0.55; p<0.001) and less affected by menstrual insecurity (RR= 1.43; IC95%: 1.17-1.74; p=0.019). Initial expense (39%), maintenance (56.4%), and fear of leakage (57%) were the major obstacles to switching to RP. The motivations were economic profitability from the first year (60%), reduction of environmental impact (80%), and daily practicality (21%). Conclusion: the French share of users of reusable sanitary products is constantly increasing. The main motivations are awareness of the ecological and economic impact and a return to nature. It remains essential to inform and educate about the health risks and good practices of menstrual protection. Further studies are needed to evaluate the consequences of this pandemic on menstrual precariousness and hygiene conditions and to see if the aid provided has been effective.
