La pratique de la spécialité de médecine générale en soins de suite et de réadaptation : perception des médecins exerçant en Basse-Normandie

Abstract : Since the 2008 reforms restructured the medium-stay healthcare provision, the growing activity in follow-up care and rehabilitation has been accompanied by an increasing medicalization of its structures. These changes aim at responding to the challenges of population aging and the increase number of chronic conditions. This medicalization involves general practitioners and geriatricians who take part in the development of a comprehensive medical practice in the follow-up care and rehabilitation centres (SSR). This descriptive study enables a better understanding of the medical working population with versatile jobs in SSR centres in Lower Normandy. It offers an inward look on their missions, their working conditions, and the relationship they build with healthcare partners. A high level of satisfaction is largely shared by most of the doctors involved in the study: they see, among other things, multi-professional work and the quality of healthcare provided in these structures in a very positive light. They confirm the benefits of stays in SSR for the weakest patients. The study also points to areas for improvement which could be taken into account to advance the practice of General Medicine and geriatrics in SSR.
