Impact du port du masque sur la relation médecin-patient : ressenti des médecins généralistes

Abstract : Background: the SARS-CoV 2 pandemic led to exceptional health measures to limit the spread of the virus in the population. Since the generalization of the mask wearing in 2020, medical consultations are therefore carried out in an unprecedented masked mode. Aim : To collect the feelings of general practitioners about the impact of mask wearing on the doctor-patient relationship. Method: qualitative study by semi-directed interviews with liberal general practitioners. Full transcription and analysis of the verbatim revealing meaningful categories. Results: 14 interviews were conducted. General practitioners pointed out a feeling of distance with their patients since the arrival of the mask, considered more or less important depending on the people interviewed. This feeling can be explained by the communication problems caused by the mask, in particular concerning non-verbal language. Difficulties in exchanging emotions and recognizing patients were noted, confirming the importance of the lower part of the face in social interactions. The misuse of the mask and the potential tense situations it generates also partly contribute to this feeling of distance. However, the doctor- patient relationship seems to be based on solid resources to maintain this bond of trust : communication strategies adapted by the doctor, good overall respect for the wearing of the mask on the part of the patients, reciprocal benevolence, trust built over the course of the time. Conclusion: the doctor-patient relationship seems strong enough to withstand the disruptions that the mask has caused. However, wearing it seems far from without consequences for social interactions, with a particularly disturbed emotional exchange. Determining the long-term consequences of a masked society therefore seems to be a major stake in the future.
