Avis des tradipraticiens kanak : réflexion sur une alliance entre médecine traditionnelle kanak et médecine conventionnelle dans le parcours de soins des patients en Nouvelle-Calédonie

Abstract : Aim: in New Caledonia, patients proceed between traditional kanak medicine (TM) and conventional medicine to get health care, but healers and doctors do not communicate, and that can lead the patients to delayed diagnosis or treatment. Incidentally, the international scientific literature supports the recognition and use of TM in health care system, which is also the aim of the New Caledonian healthcare scheme called Do Kamo. Yet, making the healers official when they practise a taboo medicine gives rise to interrogations about the ways and means to allow qualitative interaction with health professionals. What do the healers think about the idea of a cooperative work with the doctors for the care of kanak patients? The aim of this study is to explore the opinion of the kanak healers regarding a coalition between the traditional and conventional medicine health system. Methodology: we have undertaken a qualitative study using individual semi-directed interviews with kanak traditional healers which were analysed through a thematics method. Results: between April 2019 and August 2020, 7 healers were interviewed. While describing the role and practice of TM, they discussed potential avenues for a future collective work, suggesting a health care pathway that would let the doctor establish the diagnosis then define a treatment procedure in tandem with the healer. Most healers were favourable towards a coalition between traditional and conventional medicine practices, if the intellectual property of the traditional treatments is assured. Conclusion: healers are confident about the traditional care they deliver but also open-minded about a collaborative healthcare approach, recognising that it is in the best interest of their patients. However, they are concerned about the consequences of the legalisation and institutionalisation of the kanak traditional medicine which may damage the integrity of their customs and traditions.
