Le soutien à l’allaitement maternel : étude qualitative auprès de 13 médecins généralistes du Béarn

Abstract : Introduction: exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months of age. The breastfeeding rate in France is one of the lowest in Europe and drops during the first weeks of life. Because of its recognized benefits, breastfeeding represents a means of health prevention and a public health issue. The general practitioner occupies a privileged place in the follow-up of the infant and would have an important role in supporting breastfeeding. Objective: study the point of view of general practitioners concerning their role in supporting breastfeeding and identify their obstacles and needs in order to encourage the continuation of this feeding method. Material and Method: qualitative study by individual semi-directed interviews between December 2020 and August 2021 with general practitioners in Bearn. Recruitment until data saturation. Coding and analysis of verbatims carried out by two investigators, with data triangulation. Results: the analysis of the 13 interviews carried out brought out several notions. The general practitioner is in favor of breastfeeding and considers that he/she has a role in accompanying and supporting mothers. This role is limited by many factors: lack of knowledge, lack of time to devote to it, intervention too late, and lack of identification by the mothers. They identify several needs, including the identification of referral professionals and the establishment of local networks through multi-professional health centers, with the aim of improving coordination between health professionals. Information for mothers and training for health professionals must be developed. Conclusion: support for breastfeeding mothers must be improved. General practitioners have a limited role in this support. The development of proximity networks and MSPs could be a relevant tool.
