Les effets du polissage sur les restaurations en zircone : une revue systématique de la littérature

Abstract : Aim: With the development of all-ceramic dentistry, zirconia has become the ceramic of choice in prosthetic restorations. Zirconia, remarkable by its properties, must present requirements related to its intrinsic properties, in particular its surface state, which conditions its mechanical properties as well as its surface characteristics. Despite precise machining, it remains unavoidable for the dental surgeon to retouch the occlusion after assembly of the restoration in the mouth. However, it is difficult to find a perfectly efficient polishing system for a given type of zirconia, as there are so many different systems and tools. The objective of our study is to investigate the effects of different polishing systems on the different types of zirconia and their respective physicochemical and mechanical properties, as well as to determine the ideal polishing process for optimal polishing of zirconia after assembly. Material and method: This is a systematic review of the literature performed according to PRISMA recommendations. The PubMed, DOSS and Scopus databases were searched. A selection was first made by reading the titles and abstracts and then by reading the full texts. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria were included, and risk of bias assessment was performed on all studies. Results: Most of the studies showed a real benefit of polishing after step milling on monolithic zirconia. However, there are few studies showing a real benefit of polishing on layered zirconia. Conclusion: In most cases, polishing not only increases the bending strength of the zirconia, but also lowers its surface roughness to achieve a flat surface without structural defects. No conclusion can be drawn from this study due to the lack of clear evidence demonstrating the superiority of a finishing and polishing procedure over a given type of zirconia, despite the manufacturers' recommendations. Further studies will be required to provide answers regarding the ideal polishing system.
