Explications médicales des menstruations dans l’histoire de France

Abstract : Objective Menstruations are a part of a cycle of female life. This study has to analyse evolution of French scientific knowledges and thoughts used to explain menstrual periods. Methods We made a medical bibliographic research on menstruations, female cycle, genital anatomy, hormones, medicine history from Graeco-Roman Antiquity in France. Results and conclusion Medical explanations of menstruations are based during Antiquity on an analogical reasoning, by comparisons. The theory of Humours reused by Galien has a lasting influence on medical thinking until the 19th century. Experimental method, discovery of hormonal serie and histo-biogical analyse allowed to understand menstrual mechanism.
