Propositions méthodologiques pour une histoire (croisée) de la promotion de la démocratie et des democratization studies aux États-Unis (1983-1991)

Abstract : In the early 1980s, two objects centered on “democratization” emerged in the United States: democracy promotion - a foreign policy - and democratization studies - an academic discipline. This dissertation examines the nature of the links between these two objects during their birth processes in the 1970s and 1980s (Chapters 1-2), and then their interdependence in practice at the end of the Cold War between 1983 and 1991 (Chapter 3).
In order to face the theoretical challenge of writing the intercrossing history of two objects that have given rise to asymmetrical historiographies, we mobilize the Bourdieusian concept of “field”. We then propose methodological leads for an intercrossing history of the political field of democracy promotion and the academic field of democratization studies, halfway between the history of international relations and the history of social sciences. The context of the emergence of these fields also places this work in the history of the Cold War in the United States.
The study of an institutional actor in the United States, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), constitutes the main thread of this thesis. Created in 1983 with the presidential support of Ronald Reagan, this semi-private organization claims to be promoting democracy abroad and occasionally funds research projects on democratization.
