Rilla of wartime : an analysis on « Rilla of Ingleside » and the presence of war

Résumé

This dissertation is a deep dive into the idyllic community of Glen St. Mary, and how the war permanantly alters their way of life. First, I explore to what extent the characters within this community are rendered powerless by the war, such as Susan Baker and Walter Blythe, before branching out with a wide lens by analyzing how the community as a whole has changed. Whether through communication, religious beliefs, or traditions, the general lifestyle of the characters shifts throughout the novel. Next, I pick apart Montgomery’s writing style, specifically how she combines lighthearted moments with dark ones, as she finds an equilibrium between the dark sides of the war and humorous scenes. Some of the literary devices she uses are personification, metaphors, foreshadowing, and pathetic fallacy. Finally, I illustrate the historical backbone of the story ; because this novel was inspired by true events, as well as Montgomery’s life, I show the real life influences that helped to craft this novel.
