Connaissances des jeunes sur la contraception et les infections sexuellement transmissibles

Abstract : Background : birth control is widely spread all over France. However, the number of volunterred terminations of pregnancy doesnʼt seem to decrease these past few years. Objectives : The aim of this study is to analyse the knowledge and the different means of information young people have access to regarding contraception and sexually transmitted infections (STI). Methodology : knowledge and representations have been researched thanks to various questionnaires/surveys administrated during the Solidays Festival of Paris dated June 2009, to 250 young people aged between 15 and 25 years old. Results : one third of people questionned who attended the festival knew that only the condom could protect them from STI. Furthermore, the most known means of contraception still are, by far easily, the combined pill and the condom. Despite this fact, half of the oral contraception users tend to forget it regularly. Other means are less common: the implant and the intrauterin device (IUD) known by every second young person whereas only a third of them know the patch, the vaginal ring and the spmercides. Conclusion : this study allows us to underline an obvious lack of knowledge of the means of protection but also of all the means of contraceptions which are not combined pills or condoms. To improve the situation it would be interesting to develop national school health education by offering at least three sessions of sexual education. In addition, during their contraception prescriptions, health professionals should encourage so called long term methods like IUD which seems to be a good alternative to the combined pill.
