Les facteurs de satisfaction des médecins généralistes ruraux en France : étude qualitative

Abstract : Medical desertification in rural areas is a major public health issue. The main purpose of this study was to identify all the satisfaction factors of rural general practitioners. A qualitative exploratory study has been run on a semi-directive interviews basis. The panel has been selected through general practitioners working in townships located in so called areas of rural revitalization. The study aims to deal with a wide variety of age, genre, manner and place of set up. Twenty seven interviews have been made over phone, recorded, put in writing and then anonymized. Data related were independently encoded by the two researchers until saturation of the data. The panel was made of eleven women and thirteen men, between thirty two and seventy years old, from twenty two different French counties. The professional satisfaction was created by the quality of the patients, the possibility to provide first instance medical services, the work conditions and the opportunity to have continuing professional development. The personal satisfaction was constituted by the living environment, the intrinsic satisfaction, the family factors and the financial factors. The community factors were the sense of belonging, the relationships with the population, the social role and the relationships with the administrations. General medicine in rural areas involve many specific satisfaction factors. This study could be used to elaborate new proceedings, specially adjusted to the characteristic of this population, to help general practitioners setting up in rural environment.
