La France et les Français dans la guerre d'indépendance américaine : phases et aspects d'un engagement singulier

Abstract : The American War of Independence begun in 1775 and ending in 1783 is the theater of numerous events with many major European countries, in a globalized fight. Indeed, during this conflict, France, the United Kingdom and Spain will play a central part. The stake is the access to the independence of the 13 American colonies, following the movement of the Patriots which proclaims this independence in 1774. The purpose of this study is to look at how the French presence has influenced the conflict and has lead, to some extent, the American camp to victory. The cause of the American rebels will have, throughout the conflict, a great popularity in France and mostly in Paris. At first, this presence, starting in 1775, is embodied by French young nobles dreaming about adventures and proclaiming themselves defenders of the freedom. Among these personalities, the historic works were mainly focused on Fayette, charismatic, who is the symbol of the intervention in America. Secondly, after the signature of a treaty of alliance between the American insurgents and the French monarchy, the help will be both economic and human. She will take in particular the form of a French expeditionary force of 6 000 soldiers sent to the 13 colonies, under the command of Rochambeau. The cooperation between the two allies is then highlighted. Thanks to this support, Americans and French will come out winners during the decisive battles of Chesapeake and Yorktown, leading to recognition of American independence by the United Kingdom.
