Le soleil comme la mort : le manuscrit du capucin Balthazard de Bellême (1603-1667)

Abstract : The study of this 300 pages manuscript book, extremely carefully made but very disparate, kept in the Champs-Libres library, in Rennes, shows at first sight a celebration of Franciscan values, illustrated by about twenty complex images, long lines of poetry or pastorale, or by the choices of the religion names included in the lists of the thousand first capuchins of the Province of Brittany created in 1629. Earthy cares however emerge in the chronicle of internal events (specially the trauma created in Touraine by the extension of the Province of Brittany in 1648), as in the allusions to the secular misfortunes. The last part shows how the tension between these spiritual and material poles takes the personal dimension of an old man's suffering , whose work is a unique account of the end of heroic era of the settlement of the order in France.
