Représentations et pratiques des médecins généralistes d’Isère et de Savoie sur la prévention de l’exposition aux écrans chez les enfants de moins de trois ans, et pistes pour l’amélioration des pratiques

Abstract : BACKGROUND: Screens are omnipresent in homes. Since childhood, infants are subjected to images without measure. Yet the negative effects of screens are no longer to prove. National and international recommendations exist to regulate exposure to screens. OBJECTIVE: To determine the representations and practices of general practitioners of Isère and Savoie regarding screen exposure prevention on children under three years old, then to present ways to improve practices. METHOD: A qualitative focus group study was conducted with general practitioners. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed using the NVivo 11® software. A triangulation was carried out by the two researchers. RESULTS: 39 general practitioners were interviewed through 7 focus groups between December 2017 and February 2018. Negative impacts of screens are well known by the physicians. Yet, screen exposure prevention remains marginal. General practitioners perform only secondary prevention. The abundance of screens in society and the fact that they help parents in their daily life make it difficult to achieve. However, physicians believe they have a role to play in screen prevention. Systematic prevention from the first year of life is essential, along with precise advices on how to limit screen time. The doctor must leave aside his parent’ s point of view and work on his educational role. He needs training to enrich his knowledge and to be aware of existing tools. CONCLUSION: To improve doctors’ training and to endorse the tools, new studies would need to emerge. However, screen prevention can’t be fully effective without the implementation of a national campaign.
