Vécus et représentations de la maladie asthmatique chez les parents d'enfants souffrant d'asthme à Mayotte

Abstract : Introduction: Like most chronic diseases, it is managed by the patient himself daily and controlled by the doctor episodically. These must strive to integrate the psychological experience of patients in the management of the disease. What are the experiences and representations of parents having children diagnosed with asthma in Mayotte? Method: This is a qualitative study research method by grounded theory, conducted from semistructured interviews in Mayotte. Parents of asthmatic children with asthma attacks greater than or equal to 2 were included. The interviews were analyzed by two researchers independently to allow triangulation of the data. Results: The saturation of the data was obtained on a sample of 13 patients. Parents ’lived experiences were dominated by feelings of fear. Most of the parent’s representations of asthma came from personal experiences. Few parents had medical notions about the disease. Traditional treatments have an essential place in the therapeutic options reported by parents. Two categories of parents were distinguished. The first category consisted of parents refusing their child’s asthma. The second category consisted of parents who accepted asthma as a chronic disease. Conclusion: Our study shows that there are great differences between the representations of the asthmatic disease in parents having children diagnosed with asthma in Mayotte and among caregivers. These representations have an impact on the personal experience of the disease. Integrating these elements into the management of asthma could improve the patient-carer relationship and adherence to treatment.
