La contraception des étudiantes sages-femmes : enquête 2018

Abstract : Objectives: To determine the percentage of midwifery students enrolled in grade 5 who changed their contraception method during their midwifery studies ; the influence of midwifery studies on this change; to describe their contraception methods and any contraceptive accidents that occurred during their course of study. Methodology: Observational, descriptive, quantitative, and multicenter study via an anonymous, online questionnaire from January 4, 2018 to February 9, 2018, in 7 midwifery schools from the Auvergnes Rhône-Alpes region and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Results: 80 questionnaires were analyzed and 55% of the midwifery students had changed their contraception method during their midwifery studies. These students who have a change of contraception, abandon the pill to turn mainly to a long-term contraception and better compliance and persistence (intrauterine device). These students who had a positive impact on the influence of studies in the changes in a numerical scale from zero (= no influence) to 10 (= major influence). The results show that this influence was not negligible with an average of 6.9 and a standard deviation of 2.7. This influence was due according to them to the acquisition of new knowledge about contraception (84%) and also to the changes in the rhythm of life due to the demands of their placements (77%). Of the students surveyed, 35% used hormonal emergency contraception and 44% of them explained this by contraceptive failure. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of contraceptive adaptation to lifestyle, as well as the need to educate young people about contraception and the prevention of risky sexual behavior. In applying their new skills, midwives have a role to play.
