Évaluation auditive des capacités de traitement des émotions : piste pour améliorer le diagnostic d’autisme chez des patients déficients visuels

Abstract : Visual impairment can affect various aspects of development, frequently raising questions regarding the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), hence our approach: exploring a new way to facilitate this diagnosis. Our goal was to highlight differences in emotion processing in auditory modality between patients with autism and patients with blindness. We devised an experimental protocol to test the hypothesis that subjects with ASD impairments would achieve significantly lower scores with regards to visually impaired subjects. This experimental protocol, in auditory mode, was divided in three parts: emotion recognition in music, emotion recognition in sentences and emotion understanding. We found that subjects with ASD obtained lower scores than subjects with blindness, especially when it came to understanding emotions. These results seem to confirm our hypothesis. Although the small sample size (30) does not allow us to draw firm conclusions, this study does prove that it is critical to develop specific tools adapted to the diagnosis of autism in a blindness context in order to offer appropriate treatment.
