La qualité de vie au travail des sages-femmes : quels enjeux ?

Abstract : Introduction: The concept of quality of working life was born in the 70’s but has been acknowledged in 2013 in France. In this concept, we analyse the working conditions, the labour and the workers’ ability to express themselves and to act. For years, this concept was only used to describe enterprises. From now on, it can be used to describe the hospital and the medical sectors. Midwives, professional medical with identified competencies, claim a decrease of their quality of working life. Therefore, it seems legitimate to focus on how employed or liberal midwives feel in their workplace and how they are involved in the amelioration of the quality of working life. Objectives of the study: Mainly, the goal is to focus on the employed or liberal midwives’ quality of working life and then to collect their thoughts, their ideas to improve their working life. Material and method: This study is qualitative, descriptive and comprehensive and focus on employed and liberal midwives with different backgrounds and from different maternities from Bouches-du-Rhône. Thanks to the collect of 20 interviews, we have created an analysis. Results: The study underlines that midwives suffer from an insufficient recognition in their job. Indeed, their non-standard work schedule are not taken in consideration. They have inadequate wages. They are less motivated to work. And they found their relationships with their superiors insufficient or inappropriate. The participants of the study shared their desire for change: more staff, wage growth, better relationship between professionals. Conclusion: The study confirms that the quality of working life is not always suitable for the midwives. They want to enjoy a better well-being in their workplace rather than have a radical change via suggestions, or improvements.
