Synthèse des connaissances et des recommandations sur la mélatonine à l’usage des médecins généralistes

Abstract : In 2019, 10 to 20% of French people complained of sleep disorders. In 2006, the Ministry of Health issued a report on these illnesses and recommended improving general practitioners' knowledge of insomnia and promoting alternative therapies to benzodiazepines and hypnotics. Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland that has sedative and chronobiological properties. The objective of this study is to establish a literature review based on the use of the "PubMed" server in order to synthesize knowledge and recommendations on melatonin in order to produce an information sheet addressed to general practitioners. Melatonin, and in particular its presentation as a prolonged release, is of significant therapeutic interest in the primary insomnia of the subject over 55 years of age, in sleep/wake rhythm disorders, for pediatric use, particularly in cases of autism or in certain neurodegenerative pathologies. In addition, recent publications highlight promising anti-oxidant, anti-cancer and immunological properties. Finally, the 2018 ANSES report demonstrates the safety of this molecule. However, melatonin remains a little-known and poorly prescribed drug in 2019 due to the lack of social security coverage.
