Transparence et contrôle des marges en Chine : une histoire politique du Yunnan (1992-2016)

Abstract : Since 1992 the Chinese CCP and central government have been implementing a new strategy to transform Yunnan province. Yunnan emerged from a south-western dead-end of the Chinese territory and national economy to its "bridgehead" on South-East Asia. This research highlights the development of a Chinese margin in Yunnan province, documenting its evolution and stressing on its political stakes. This research tries to qualify this strategy as the "strategy of transparency". The researcher argues that China implemented such a policy in Yunnan, lifting its isolation toward a hyper-connection with South-East Asia, that indeed sustained Beijing’s political control on this formerly rebellious province. Research methodology includes analysis of economic development, political divisions between Yunnan and Bejing elites as well as a reflection on literature and artistic creation in Yunnan. This work aims at attracting researchers’ attention to a part of China that is still often left behind by academics, while this western province is at the heart of the current Chinese strategy to rebalance its economy between East and West and engage South-East Asia. It also highlights one of China’s strategies to deal with a politically unstable part of its territory.
