Autonomie professionnelle des sages-femmes : freins et leviers

Abstract : Introduction: Since millennium midwifery exist. For a long time, this profession was reserved to women but several evolutions made it possible to be a medical profession. A doubt still persists about the real midwife independence. Are they really independent? Main objective: Explore midwife perceptions about their professional independence. Final objective: Promote midwife independence. Methods: We use a qualitative analysis for carry out this essay. We interview 10 midwifes working in different sort of maternity based in Bouches-du-Rhône. The purpose was to interview two midwifes from each structure. Thanks to a mind card we collect many information for this essay. Results: We picked up obstacle and lever to midwifes independence. Midwifery is unknown from many people and health care provider. This ignorance about our profession generates a reduction of independence. Trust and experience are very important for the perception of independence. It seems to be an important element to the midwife independence. Continuing education and gynecology reinforce professional independence. Conclusion: Perception of independence is personal and subjective. A better knowledge of our competence could rehabilitate and prove midwifes independence. A Midwife is fully responsible for all the acts she does, this proves the independence of the profession. The enlargement of medical prescriptions, presence of men in the profession and the creation of birthing centers could increase our professional independence. Thanks to birthing centers a midwife could take care in total independence the health of pregnant women.
