Les écrans interactifs chez l’enfant de moins de 3 ans : évaluation de la prévention médicale auprès des parents et état des lieux de l’exposition

Abstract : Background: regarding the massive increase of interactive mobile screen household equipment and the omnipresence of television, many recommendations are in favor of a limitation of use, especially among the youngest. Objective: the main goal of this study is to evaluate the proportion of parents who report having discussed the subject of their child’s exposure to the screens during a consultation with a health professional. The secondary aim is to provide an assessment of the preschool exposure to screens, especially interactive screens. Methods: a questionnaire was submitted to parents of children aged 6 months to 3 years in a pediatric emergency ward and several nurseries. This observational, cross-sectional and multicentered study was conducted from January to May 2019. Results: 451 responses were analyzed, representing 64% of the population eligible for the survey. Only 23% of parents reported having discussed the subject of exposure to their child’s screens with a doctor, most often on the initiative of the parents themselves. Feelings of a benefit of screens on child learning concerned 35% of parents, while 68% said they were sufficiently informed. At least 42% of children were exposed to interactive screens at least weekly, 36% of them using smartphones and 13% using tablets. Conclusions: our study shows that the theme of exposure to screens is hardly addressed by physicians in consultation. This study provides elements that could help to better target prevention messages.
