Voyage, propagande et pratiques diaristiques : la mission espagnole dans les Carnets de Mgr Baudrillart (16 avril-24 mai 1916)

Abstract : Alfred Baudrillart’s journals, or Carnets, are so widely known for their documentary value that historians have long considered the Parisian intellectual and ecclesiastic as more of a witness than an actor. These journal entries are valuable first-hand accounts of early 20 th century history, but more significantly, they provide an intimate window into Baudrillart’s active role and agency during this period. The initiation of the first lines with the World War brought to light the writer’s rallying, which, halfway through the hostilities, led him to cross the Pyrenees as a missionary for the French cause. Baudrillart carefully documented this journey in his journal and this legacy provides us with ample material to gain a more in-depth understanding of the man as traveller, propagandist and diarist. The fact that he continued with these occupations after the war had ended suggests an impossible demobilization for him.
