Prévenir les troubles vocaux des chanteurs : intérêt d’une application mobile pour changer les habitudes

Abstract : Introduction : Singers require their voice quality to be at its best while practicing their art. Preventing vocal difficulties therefore appears of the utmost importance for them. If Vocal Hygiene Education (VHE) is effective to enhance their knowledge of voice function and care, it does not necessarily bring them to reduce their phono-traumatic habits. Thus, we suggest setting personnalized goals post-VHE may help them decrease some phonotraumatic habits they would perceive in their behavior. We also wish to explore the benefit that could be brought out of using a mobile app to help following successfully these goals.
Method : Twenty-one subjects were divided in two matched groups. Each group followed their goals set after VHE helped by the mobile app or their own means alternatly during two timeframes.
Results : They showed 1. a significant increase of scores linked to voice knowledge ; 2. a significant increase of scores on the scale measuring habit change ; 3. Uneven fluctuation of scores on the scale measuring perceived voice quality ; 4. Scores linked to habit change tended to progress more while using the app and correlated positively with app entries reporting success in following the goals.
Conclusion : This study confirmed the efficiency of VHE on singers' knowledge of voice function and care. Setting goals also proved effective in triggering action on their phono-traumatic behaviors, however with no positive effect on perceived voice quality. Observations linked to the relevance of using an app to improve goal pursuit finally looked encouraging.
