Représenter les violences sexuelles dans la littérature médiévale, fin XIIe-milieu XVe siècle

Abstract : Representations of sexual violence in medieval literature are few, but not insignificant. Although historians have been studying the issue of rape in the Middle Ages since the 1980s, the study of medieval literary sources on this subject has remained largely in the hands of literature researchers. Yet literary sources are particularly rich material for the study of cultural history and the history of representations. The aim of this study is to understand the medieval literary sources that evoke sexual violence from a historical perspective. Thus, starting from the Arthurian novels of the late XIIth century and reaching the farces of the XVth century, this study seeks to analyse the cultural stakes around the mise-en-scene of rape and the descriptions of sexual violence in medieval French literary texts. These representations are not meaningless, they carry the social norms that regulate - among other things - the relationship between men and women.Works of fiction offer both possibilities of subversion and reaffirmation of cultural codes ; the theme of sexual violence is far from being excluded from these logics.
