Le protoxyde d’azote : usage médical et usage détourné

Abstract : Nitrous oxide, also called "laughing gas", "proto" or "balloon", is a gas commonly used in medicine in emergency departments, especially for its analgesic, anxiolytic and anesthetic properties. It is its euphoric properties that are sought for its abuse. This abuse, coming mainly from cartridges for whipped cream dispenser, has been steadily increasing in France and around the world for several years. This recreational use has been leadind to neurological damage, mainly due to the interaction of this gas with the metabolism of the vitamin B12. Cases of nitrous oxide addiction have also been reported by the Addictovigilance networks in France. Recently, a craving linked to the consumption of nitrous oxide has also been reported, which shows that knowledge about the consequences of the misuse of nitrous oxide is evolving.
