Adaptation française de l’échelle AIDA (Assessment of Identity Development in Adolescence), destinée à évaluer le développement de la personnalité à l’adolescence

Abstract : Borderline personality disorder (BPD), which is very common in adolescence, needs an early detection to enable the most appropriate and early care possible. French tools are limited. The Assessment of Identity Development in Adolescence (AIDA), is a self-questionnaire developed for this purpose, with good psychometric properties. The aim of this study was to develop a French version of AIDA, and to test its psychometric properties (reliability, validity). Methods: BB5 and SDQ-parents questionnaires were used to assess convergent and discriminant validity, as well as the patients’ diagnostics. The clinical sample was composed of 107 adolescents, followed in child psychiatry in Montpellier. Two groups were set up for the analyses: a clinical control group and a group with BPD patients. Results: the French version of the AIDA showed good reliability and validity. Cronbach's alpha was 0.95 for the global diffusion scale, 0.91 for the primary scales and between 0.76 and 0.86 for the subscales. The AIDA allowed for a significant difference between the clinical control group and the BPD group with large effect sizes (d > 0.8 for the global and primary scales). Regarding convergent and discriminant validity, the AIDA showed broadly similar patterns of structure with the BB5. Regarding the parent SDQ, the AIDA total score correlated positively, with a small effect size, for some scales. Conclusion: the psychometric properties of the French AIDA scale are satisfactory and similar to those of other countries. Its use is therefore recommended to screen for BPD in adolescence.
