Rigidités du marché du travail et chômage : quelles relations ? Une réflexion à partir du cas de la France

Abstract : This essay brings to light the relations between the rigidity of the labor market and the unemployment based on the case of France, in order to explain at least partially the unemployment. With the first oil crisis in 1973 appears mass unemployment in the European community. In 1979, the second oil crisis in turn leads to a new surge in unemployment. As we see in our first part, despite the political actions against unemployment, it is high and continuing. From a theoretical point of view, the rigidities of the labor market provide an explanation for the high unemployment that existed in France. The legislation on employment protection provides some answers to the duration of unemployment which is particularly long in France. It does not however allow us to draw any conclusions about the rate of unemployment. Finally, we will note during our development that the principle of flexicurity, through the danish case highlights the advantages that France could gain from a greater flexibility of its labor market.
