Le peau à peau : pratiques et connaissances des professionnels de santé en salle de naissance

Abstract : Skin-to-skin contact is a technique that has greatly developed itself in the delivery rooms, It's widespread use is uncontested. Unfortunately life-threatening neonatal events with skin-to-skin have been noted. What is the level of knowledge of the health personnel in the delivery rooms about the skin-to-skin technique and how do they implement it on a daily basis with the objective of preventing the occurrence of these life-threatening events? From September to December 2011, a survey was done in nine different maternities in the Ile-de-France region. The results show that healthcare professionals have a poor knowledge of benefits of skin-to-skin and that only 37% of them recognise the risk of neonatal life-threatening events related to that technique, whilst only 3% explicitly mention it. Physiopathology is not widespread since 70% of maternity professionals expose the child to theses suspected risks and only 37% of them actually know the proper recommendations for the implementation of skin-to-skin. Dedicated training and practical help seem to be compulsory for the improvement of skin-to-skin and the security of the newborn.
