Analyse comparative des processus d'adoption et des impacts du Semis direct sur Couverture Végétale permanente (SCV) sur les exploitations agricoles familiales dans 3 régions tropicales : Madagascar, Cameroun et Laos

Abstract : The Direct seeding Mulch-based Cropping systems is one of the Conservation Agriculture systems developed by the "Programme d'Actions Multi Pays en Agroécologie". DMC is based on three agronomic principles: zero-tillage, permanent soil cover, crop rotation or association. This study deals with three areas: Lake Alaotra in Madagascar, the cotton area of the North-Cameroon and the provinces of Xieng Khouang and Sayabouri in Laos. The aim of the study is to explain the low rates of DMC adoption in these areas by comparing the DMC adoption processes in order to, then, develop a generic model explaining DMC adoption in smallholder farming. The analysis of the different factors shows that the context on Lake Alaotra is favourable to DMC and that the development projects have an important role in their diffusion. However, this role is temporary, in opposition to the situation in the North-Cameroon where the cotton society brings long-term support. In the North-Cameroon the main constraint is the collective management of the resources (free grazing, fires) making the mulch conservation during the dry season difficult, there is competition between farming and livestock farming. The study shows also the famers capacity to adapt themselves to the constraints by modifying the spread systems (DMC with low quantity of inputs, forage Innovative Cropping Systems). However, the impact of these famer innovations remains to be studied by the research.
