La criminalisation des migrants dans l'Union européenne

Abstract : Criminalizing migrants is one of the strategies implemented by the European Union to control and reduce migration flows. Different processes, legal, political and rhetorical, lead to this criminalization. It is elaborated by European and national migration policies that point out migrants as "illegals" and organize the repression against irregular migration on this basis. This vision of migration is fostered by political and media discourses that mix migration and security issues. Criminalization and stigmatization of migration have major consequences on the migrants' everyday lives. They are considered as "illegals" throughout their migration journey, from the EU borders to their daily lives in European societies. The widespread use of imprisonment of migrants is the climax of this criminalization, as it has a criminal meaning and yet targets innocent people.
