La santé des enfants des rues : situation actuelle et défis : programme de la Fondation Mérieux et perspectives d'élargissement du soutien aux enfants

Abstract : ln many developing countries, the streets are a place of exchanges, meetings and conviviality. Yet, for twenty years, they have also been the shelter for millions of children who eat, sleep, work and live there: the street children. A unique expression to describe heterogeneous situations. Although, some return to their household at night, others do not have any contact with their family anymore and try to support themselves independently. Further thought is needed on the problem of children's vulnerability to infectious diseases. Are street children the most exposed ? Are children suffering from the highest rates of death due to infectious disease? According to UNICEF, children under the age of five are the most at risk to die from an infectious disease such as : pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria, measles and HIV/AIDS. As Fondation Merieux wants to enlarge its support to children, it could be relevant, to set up a new project that focuses on this category of children. Pneumonia ranks as the leading cause of deaths among children under five and is considered to be a "forgotten killer" by UNICEF. Pneumonia, thus, seems to be an ideal target for an expansion of the foundation's activities.
