Consultation préconceptionnelle et la sage-femme Midwife and preconception care

Abstract : Background: Preconception advice and guidance is now essential in managing maternal and child health. The objective is to detect any potential risks in future pregnancies in women of childbearing age and to deal with them. Method: 14 interviews with experts (doctors, midwives, pharmacists) were conducted on the basis of a semi-structured questionnaire concerning the role of preconception consultations in public health and the future role of the midwife. Currently the midwife is not considered as the primary contact. Results: 92% of the responses agreed that preconception advice is a part of a public health approach. The role of the midwife is defined as the physiology (of pregnancy), delivering information, and offering guidance. Conclusion: As a result of new and enhanced skills in midwifery and the reduction in the number of doctors the midwife will be in future the primary agent for all preconception advice and guidance.
