Répercussions qualitatives et quantitatives des mutations agricoles récentes sur les systèmes d'irrigation traditionnels dans le bassin versant de la Vaigai-Periyar, Inde du Sud : approche synoptique, multi-temporelle et multi-scalaire s'appuyant sur la télédétection

Abstract : Tanks are artificial reservoirs of water scattered in the landscapes of several Indian states for centuries. Their main function is to collect and store water from run-off and rainfalls to irrigate agricultural lands (ayacuts) and to supply water for domestic purposes. They are also used for religious purposes. They supply different ecosystemic services, such as the refill of ground-water reserves, a habitat for numerous species of migratory birds or the reduction of erosive run-off. They are common goods managed collectively by the populations which depend on it. The literature states a progressive abandon of these structures in certain Indian states. This abandon would be the consequence of rural transformations link with sociotechnical (green revolution) and economic (free market) changes that are causing the reduction of collective actions to manage and to maintain the tanks in good state. Our research question was to know whether tank irrigation function was still preserved in the 2000s in the Vaigai-Periyar watershed ? The hypothesis being that tanks are gradually abandoned at the expense of individual's irrigation structures. From a methodological point of view, while considering the climatic variations, the objective was to detect i) the variation in time of the volumes of water stored synonym of degradation of the structures and ii) land cover/use changes inside the limits of tanks. Remote sensing was used to detect tanks on the older images then to map at several dates land cover/use inside tanks to map land use/cover changes. The set of images contained Landsat MSS, TM and ETM + images. A GIS database was also constituted from several sources to contribute to the explanation of the spatial dynamics observed through remote sensing. The main results of this study are i) a dynamic mapping of reservoirs, ii) an evaluation of the stored volumes of water, iii) the establishment of an explanatory framework of the intra-regional differences about the states of the tanks.
